Versioned backups

UltraEdit and UEStudio have several different configuration options for backing up your files. One of the most useful of these is versioned backups, which allow you to save your file changes incrementally based upon the settings in Advanced : Configuration : File Handling : Backup.

Versioned Backups

Step 1: Enable versioned backups

The settings for versioned backups may be accessed in Advanced : Configuration : File Handling : Backup.

Versioned Backups

You will need to set when Version Backups will save. Two options are provided: "On Save" and "On Automatic Save."

On Save
If "On Save" is selected, versioned backups will be saved when you manually save the file.

On Automatic Save
If "On Automatic Save" is selected, versioned backups will be saved based on the automatic save settings in the same dialog.

You can select either or both of these options, but for the purposes of this tutorial we have selected "On Automatic Save" only.

Step 2: Specify the backup file name and path format

You can customize the filepath and file name of the versioned backup in the "Format" text field. There are several different variables available for customizing the location and name of the versioned backup. By default, this is set to:

$n$c$e

With this format, versioned backups would be saved as "example1.txt" in the active directory. The $n variable is replaced with the file name, the $c variable is replaced with the sequential number backup, and the $e is replaced with the File Extension.

The $c variable will begin at 0 and increment by one each time a versioned backup is saved. Therefore, after four versioned backup saves, you would have example0.txt, example1.txt, example2.txt, and example4.txt as versioned backups.

Click on the "?" button next to the Format text field for a description of all available variables.

The following is a list of all available variables for the versioned backup save format.

Path Variables

$b - backups will be saved to default backup directory
$p - current file path
$n - current file name
$e - current file extension

Time and Date Variables

$H - hour
$M - minute
$d - day
$m - month
$y - year

Miscellaneous Variables

$c - counter (starting at 0, increments by 1 each save)
$u - user name

Step 3: Set the default backup directory

If you're using the $b variable (default backup directory) in your versioned backup format, you will need to specify a default backup directory where all versioned backups will be saved.

For our example, we have set the versioned backup format to:

$b$n$e ($d-$m-$y) $c

Because we have used the $b variable, we will need to set the default backup directory.

Step 4: Set the automatic save timer

In our example, we chose to only save versioned backups on automatic save. We will need to set the automatic save timer in order for our versioned backups to be saved as well. You can specify in minutes how often the automatic save will occur. If this is set to 0, no save will occur.

In the screenshot below, we set the automatic save timer to 10. This means that every 10 minutes, our open files will be saved automatically, and a versioned backup will be placed in our default backup directory.

Step 5: Set maximum number of backups

You can also specify the maximum number of backups to be saved. Setting this to -1 is the equivalent of unlimited backups.

Versioned Backups

That's it! You've successfully configured versioned backups. To make sure your versioned backups are saving as you expect, check the default backup directory you specified in step 3. The result of our format:

$b$n$e ($d-$m-$y) $c

is shown in the screenshot below.
